Can students use 2 calculators on test day?
A: Yes!
The College Boards' complete calculator policy.
Can students use a highlighter on test day?
A: No!
ETS' concern with highlighters is that they would make it easier for students to cheat--they could highlight key work for their neighbor to copy or correct multiple choice answers, etc. Your school's AP coordinator receives testing procedural information, like this.
Are calculator memories cleared before the exam?
A: No, they are not.
This has been much discussed on the list. The following comments would be common:
|
Students should be encouraged to abide by this policy, even though it is not enforceable, for the sake of integrity.
|
There is little a student could actually type that would markedly improve their score--if they don't know their stuff, looking up on their calculator will waste their time.
|
Certain additional programs ARE legal--read below! |

What extra programs are students allowed to have on their calculators?
A: A short answer: programs that make their calculator equivalent to other legal calculators.
This (also) has been much discussed on the list. Here is a list of some of the programs that the list has agreed are legal:
|
Programs that prompt for the variables in a similar fashion to the 89, i.e., a normalcdf program for the 83+ that prompts students for the 4 variables, also binomialpdf, etc. (Note that CatalogHelp provides a similar feature).
|
Chi-Square Goodness-of-fit and a t-inverse program are on the 89 and 84, so they could added.
|
A program that creates a residual list for the 86.
|
Prompting for Assumptions for Inference is NOT legal. |

What do experienced teachers recommend to do AFTER the exam?
The two most popular decisions about what to do after the exam are to cover Advanced Topics (i.e., ANOVA, Multiple Regression) or assign projects. Projects often involve the design of a good experiment or survey, the collection of the data, and then its analysis (either regression or inference).
